Wine cellar at Whisper Rock

This is a wine cellar that I designed and built for the in north Scottsdale. The timbers were from a 250 year old Pennsylvania farmhouse. The interior was built from reclaimed lumber from tobacco drying sheds and old barns from the south. Needless to say, this project got the creative juices flowing from the beginning on through to the end. We had a space to work with in their family room that connected to their dining room with a passthru. As I was standing in the family room, looking out into their courtyard, I felt that we needed to bring the exterior on into the interior. We used the same stone veneer and clay tile on the roof that was used on the exterior. The homeowners wanted to use as much reclaimed materials as we could. Also, they have a an "old world" theme to their home and wanted to take that to another level. The homeowners idea was to create the candle niches on the exterior and wanted the old world plaster in places. Other than that, they just kind of let me run with it.

I made a rolling ladder for access to the higher shelves. The problem was, what to do with the ladder when you're not using it? I had one of those middle of the night inspiration moments and realized that I could create a receptacle in the end of the cabinetry for the ladder to roll into for storage.

The interior has a mix of white oak, red oak, alder, poplar, beech, cherry, pine, fir and cedar. I applied various finished to help them be distinct, but topped with a common glaze so they pulled back together in order to have a continuity. We have numerous materials, textures and finishes, but there is a fluidity as your vision pans through the home.
